The Compaq dc7800 also comes with a stamp of approval from the EPEAT Gold registry for passing all the strict environmental requirements to make it environment-friendly.

The desktop PC is aimed for business users with a good design which fits the CPU on the back of the monitor (see photo).

Apple has agreed to buy P.A. Semi, a boutique microprocessor design company, according to Forbes magazine. The deal is reportedly worth $278 million in cash.

Led by chip-industry veteran Dan Dobberpuhl, P.A. Semi is perhaps best known for its PWRficient processors for the multibillion-dollar high-performance embedded-computing markets. PWRficient 64-bit multicore processors aim to redefine power , cost and throughput efficiency in high-performance processing.

P.A. Semi's processors could provide advanced features in future iPods and iPhones.

Deja Vu for P.A. Semi

The acquisition may be a dream come true for P.A. Semi, as well as deja vu. When Apple was ready to dissolve its relationship with IBM and its PowerPC processors, P.A. Semi was the rumored heir apparent processor maker for the Mac. P.A. Semi is an active member in Power.org and leverages IBM's Power Architecture in its processors.

However, Apple selected Intel as its chipmaking partner for the Mac. This time around, it appears Apple CEO Steve Jobs is more concerned about a competitive advantage for the iPhone.

"P.A. Semi makes some great technology, very power-efficient and ideal for a variety of mobile devices. It does appear to be something of a slap in Intel's face. The phone comes with a 25MB user memory and comes with a microSD card support. So you can put a nice 4GB card to store up your music and videos. The phone has Windows Media Player 11 for media playback.

iPhone to be launched in September in India

Confirmed reports from plenty of sources that the 8GB iPhone from Apple is going to come to India (officially) in September. We have seen plenty of iPhones here on the streets of Bombay purchased from gray markets at a good price. The prices floating around for an iPhone in Mumbai are around Rs. 20,000 to 22,000, depending on your source.

The 8GB version will be officially launched in September this year for a price of Rs. 28,000, much more than the price in the US.

The phone will be launched with Vodafone and finally there will be a "legal" way to get your hands on this. Although we doubt many users would go this way :D

That Apple will release a new iPhone this summer seems almost certain. The rumor mill is grinding, and the evidence is trickling in, and if Apple’s iPod release schedule is anything to go by, we should expect an updated model 12 months after the last one.

So if we step back for a second and take a look at the collected “evidence” so far, what does it point to?

Radio

IPhone 2.0 will be 3-G. If it is to stand any chance in the as-yet-untapped Japanese market, a fast data connection is a must. The official line from both Apple and AT&T is that a 3-G iPhone will ship this year, and as two launches in one year are unlikely, we can only assume that there will be one international 3-G iPhone. Certainly, the Infineon chipset expected to power the new phone will work on both HSDPA and WCDMA networks, as well as continuing to support EDGE for customers outside of good 3-G coverage.

Camera

The iPhone’s camera sucks. It offers the user no more than the most basic functionality and only captures a measly two megapixels. It’s so bad that a range of unofficial software upgrades has already been released, adding new features and even video. The Infineon chipset mentioned above supports cameras of up to 5 megapixels and also video capture using Apple’s codec of choice, h.264. So more pixels and video seem very likely, but what of video calls? Apple’s Mac application iChat has had video conferencing for some time. It would be a perfect match for the iPhone’s big bright screen, but that would entail a second camera. I’d give this one a 50-50 chance.

Hardware

The current iPhone is so simple that it can hardly be improved. Expect the changes to be small, and then only cosmetic. It looks a little chunky next to the svelte iPod Touch, so the new model will likely be thinner. There are rumblings on the internet that the body will be black plastic instead of aluminum, which seems very unlikely. The current iPhone is surprisingly tough, so we’d expect Apple to stick to glass and metal. The only sure thing thing is that as soon as you see the new model, your old iPhone will look inexplicably clunky.

Software

Software is arguably the most important part of the iPhone. Ever since its launch last year, seemingly every cellphone maker has released a touchscreen phone. None of them comes close in ease of use, because none of them understands that the interface is everything.

The currently beta iPhone SDK shows us that the v2.0 operating system will be an incremental upgrade, adding niceties such as search and, if we’re lucky, copy-and-paste. With the iPod, Apple has often held new features back from older models in order to drive sales. Part of this is the accounting model it uses: In order to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley (or Oxshit) laws, Apple won’t add new features to old hardware. The iPhone, though, like the Apple TV, is accounted for on a subscription basis. Expect the v1.0 iPhone to run the exact same software as the new one, exempting features which utilize new hardware.

You're pounding the keyboard, double-clicking away, sighing and grumbling, but to no avail: That devilish little hourglass icon refuses to give way to the Web site you're trying to reach.

Most Internet users have encountered trouble reaching online destinations, but they often attribute the problem to their wireless network cutting out or a server momentarily going down.

Sometimes, though, the problem is more mysterious.

At any given moment, messages throughout the world are lost to cyber black holes, according to new computer science research.

Ethan Katz-Bassett, a graduate student in computer science at the University of Washington, and his advisor, Arvind Krishnamurthy, designed a program to continuously search for these strange Internet gaps, when a request to visit a Web site or an outgoing e-mail gets lost along a pathway that was known to be working before.

To make sure the black holes they detect are not simply due to a problem with the end user or the host server, they look for computers that can be reached from some, but not all, of the Internet, meaning the issue must be occurring en route.

"We were astounded when we did an initial four-month study and we saw how many problems there were," Katz-Bassett told LiveScience. "It seemed infeasible that this could be happening so often. They're definitely more common than we thought."

Now the team constantly monitors the Web for black holes and posts a map of where the problems are around the world at any given moment.

They hope their data will help Internet service providers track down the route of problems experienced on their networks.

"Network administers are definitely interested in it," Katz-Bassett said. "I think we need to do more analysis of the data and see where exactly these problems are occurring. It would be interesting to come up with predictions about where problems were most likely to occur."

The scientists named their monitoring system Hubble after the Hubble Space Telescope, which can also detect black holes, albeit the astrophysical kind.

They hope their data will help improve the consistency of the Internet, where we increasingly entrust vital information.

"I think we would like it to be more reliable," Katz-Bassett said. "It's orders of magnitude less reliable than the telephone network right now. I think it should be pretty possible to get it closer."

The researchers will present their findings at the Usenix Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation being held next week in San Francisco.

The project was funded by the National Science Foundation.

The first Android devices were always scheduled to arrive later this year, and while we've already seen a couple prototypes and hacked ports floating around, it looks like T-Mobile is the first out of the gate to confirm that it'll have phones based on Google's mobile OS. Speaking at the Wireless Innovations 2008 conference, T-Mo's VP of broadband and new business division Joe Sims said he'd played with an early version of T-Mobile's first Android phone and that it would ship in the fourth quarter of this year. Sims said that although he was initially skeptical of Android, he's now "impressed," and that T-Mobile would eventually have "more than one" Android phone. first open ur msg window and type LIVE and send it to 2567 so that after 5 min u get the setting of Airtel Live or if u have already no need for this procedure.
now then open that setting and copy all the settings from it and create one access point manually which has all the settings like Airtel Live has.
now only one change will be there and it would be in access point name which is "Airtelmms.com" instead of originally "Airtelgprs.com".
ok u've done it just active that setting and access free airtel gprs on ur phone.

BSNL Free GPRS Internet Hack

Logic: the server has a major bug in it, by which it fails to block two simultaneous connections from the phone and

establishes a connection with full internet working,

Supported devices: all phones with multichannel gprs support

For connection on your mobile phone.

1) Make two connections like BSNL111 and BSNL222

2) Select the application you got to have the full connection working on.

Surpassingly “web” now just select “BSNL111” profile and select a link like wap.cellone.in the page will get open,

just press the red button such that the “web” application goes in the background.

Make sure that the gprs connection is still established with the web app.

Two parallel lines on the top left of the screen will confirm this

3) Now open any other app that requires web connection like opera. Select BSNL222 and open any other link like

wap.google.com, u will get AN error.

the aim of using the other app is to perform multi-channel gprs,

this is verified by seeing some dots on the pre-existing connection established by “web”

ACCESS DENIED.
Technical description:
403 Forbidden - You are not allowed to communicate with the requested resource.”

4) close opera and open web and open a site like esato.com

5) if everything is done as said here then esato will load and THTS IT! We have the whole internet!

For connection on pc.

1)create a connection and enter the number to be dialed as *99***1#

2) enter the string as extra initialization command

3)now dial from pc, the connection will be established

4)pick the phone and open “web” open “wap.cellone.in” the phone shows error .

5) close “web” and then from the browser open

Along with this change, Cubans will be allowed to buy computers and DVD players next month, those were also restricted items under the previous Castro regime. Now the only problem with all these great news, is that Cubans will have to pay "hard currency" for the items, this is because the normal currency used in the island is worth nearly nothing in global terms. The population then has to rely on cash remittances sent by relatives living abroad or the money tourists leave on the island for acquiring these very expensive services.

Tech2 Exclusive: India May Ban Facebook, Orkut and Foreign Social Networking Sites

Close on the heels of the recent directive to telecom operators to provide for lawful interception of Blackberry and other encrypted messaging services, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has now asked Social Networking sites based outside India to fall in line.

"Sites such as Orkut and Facebook allow for heavily encrypted exchanges of information", a highly placed source at the MHA told Tech2.com. MHA officials are believed to be especially worried about the phenomenon of "scraps" and "pokes" respectively on these two sites.

"Imagine if applications such as SuperPoke fell into the hands of anti-national and anti-social (no pun intended) elements", remarked a senior MHA official who did not wish to be named. "The consequences could be disastrous, especially considering the lack of sufficient monitoring of Indian users' walls," he warned.

Intelligence operatives are of the belief that Jehadi terror cells could work out a sophisticated system of communication by "throwing sheep" at each other using a site such as Facebook.com whose servers the Indian government cannot access. The government has asked all Indian social networking sites such as BigAdda.com, Yaari.com and Minglebox.com to maintain records of all user activity including "change of status, profile picture, favorite sitcoms etc." in keeping with the law of the land.

It seems that unless their overseas counterparts such as the big two as well as other popular sites such as Hi5, Bebo, LinkedIn and MySpace reach an agreement with Indian authorities on making user data originating and terminating in the country available on demand, they could soon be blocked by local Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

A spokesperson for ISPAI (ISP Assoc of India) clarified that preliminary talks had been held in this regard and ISPs had begun making preparations to block networking sites in the event of an official directive being issued. The ISPAI executive also sheepishly (no pun intended there either) admitted to tech2.com that he was in the process of figuring out a way to export his Facebook friend list to ibibo.com.

Spokespersons for both Google, which owns Orkut.com and Facebook declined to comment till they received any directives in writing. However along with Yahoo, AOL and MSN, both companies were adamant that "the privacy of our users is of the greatest importance to us" though special considerations were being made for "countries in which the growth potential of the market outweighed the prospect of challenging draconian security laws".

A senior NASSCOM official welcomed the move though she admitted that the industry was worried less about the security implications and more about the alarming decline in productivity. "Young engineers 'on the bench' at IT companies seem to be spending more time on Web 2.0 sites like Twitter, Digg & Last.fm instead of improving, for instance their SAP implementation skills," said the official.

"God forbid if all this online socializing actually translates into a real social life for young techies", sighed the worried official.

Bradley, a management consultant and resident of Washington, D.C. accuses Google of several counts of fraud and misrepresentation, including misrepresentation in commercial advertising, and of "willfull, wanton, fraudulent and malicious" conduct regarding its AdSense product. The suit also alleges misrepresentation in interstate commerce.Bradley, owner of Brava Corp., alleges that her staff spent 100 hours placing and reviewing HTML code for Google AdSense on www.bravacorp.com. Once the code was placed, Bradley asked Google to remove several competing AdSense advertisements, as per the AdSense user agreement. Bradley vs GoogleAccording to the complaint, Google then completely removed AdSense from Bradley's site and accused Bradley of violating AdSense policies by fraudulently clicking on advertisements.Bradley denied clicking on the ads except to verify that the advertisers were not selling competing products.The AdSense terms of service prohibit customers from clicking on their own ads. Update #1: I've noticed that a lot of people are saying this is a publicity stunt. I can't say for sure that's the case, since Bradley never returned my calls, but I don't think that assumption is correct. She sued Yahoo on August 1st and Google on August 28, but never returned a phone call from me and never sent out any press releases. I found the lawsuit in court records. In addition, Bradley doesn't seem to have any way of monetizing any attention she receives from this. I think it's important to understand the difference between publicity seeking (such as the ClickDefense class action lawsuit) and a case such as this, which clearly makes the plaintiff look ridiculous.

Update #2: There are some funny threads on this lawsuit at WebmasterWorld, Geek Village and the DigitalPoint Forums.

Update #3: Theresa Bradley called me this morning to confirm the lawsuit. She informed me that she had an addendum to the complaint and would forward such via e-mail, but had to get off the phone before I could inquire further. I'll let you know when I've heard more.

It's so easy to forget about that prohibition and click on the ad - and boom, you get banned. Or your co-worker sitting on the same IP clicks some ads - how could he know about the prohibition? Why Google Adsense can't just not account for those few clicks, rather than count them as a fraud? The screen hinge is significantly improved and feels really solid. Without putting it through 20,000 open / close cycles, we think it's fairly trustworthy, definitely good HTC gear.
The microscopic keyboard keys are an absolute nightmare to type on with two hands if you've got normal human mitts. Unfortunately, it's just too small to use regularly, and too large to use with your thumbs; with that kind of real estate we'd have preferred a proper split thumb-board with a nice big track pad in the middle. Major bummer.
The trackpad is pretty sensitive, but a little difficult to control. The machine itself is certainly snappy enough, though, even running Vista with Aero.
Hitting SnapVUE / Windows Mobile-mode is instantaneous, albeit a little jarring -- especially since the screen is so huge and WinMo is so clearly not intended for it -- but it's nice to have a lighter weight interface than full-on Windows.
Try though we might, we simply could not find a way to disengage the unit from its leather-bound case. Maybe this was outlined in the Shift's documentation, of which we received none. Quite annoying.
HTC kindly bundles a screen protector, a spare clicky stylus, external USB hub with Ethernet (ahem, Air), and headphones with mic.

All in all not bad, but it's going to take a hell of a lot more than what the Shift's offering up to get us to drop $1,500 on a UMPC of any kind. And it isn't winning it any further points considering that one of the device's main draws -- the keyboard -- may as well not even exist for us fat-fingered fools. Update: Apparently the case is permanently bolted to the unit and can't be removed, part of some weird FCC requirement regarding antenna distance / SAR. At very least they HTC could have used Philips head screws (and not Torx) to facilitate ease of removal.

Wikipedia reaches 10 million total articles

Wikipedia has turned itself, for better or for worse, in a one-stop information shop for many things on the web. Having faced criticism and receiving praise for the project, today the site is more alive than ever having reached a milestone of 10 million articles this past Wednesday if you count the 253 languages that have at least one article. The top Wikipedia is unsurprisingly the one written in English that includes 2.3 million articles followed by German and French which have yet to reach a million. Translations creating duplicates of the same page aside, it's an impressive figure and one that will continue to grow without a doubt.

There are other milestones Wikipedia is hoping to reach, such as people predicting when the the behemoth site will hit 10 million English articles. As a reference, Wikipedia reached 1 million English articles almost exactly two years ago, a relatively short time for so much information. FYI,

Apple’s License Agreement calls it illegal to Install Safari on Windows

People usually don’t read EULAs before installing any software, but it seems as if Apple forgot to read their own EULA before pushing Safari 3.1 out of their doors, in a very questionable fashion. If you are someone who reads and sticks with the terms, you can never install Safari for Windows on any machine which is not "Apple-labeled". Read the highlighted section of the image below:

"This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time."

The above sentence can only mean two things. Either Safari for Windows was only meant for Boot Camp users, or all PC users had to purchase a Mac to try Safari. Maybe, it was just an oversight, but it’s still damn funny.

I believe folks who were assigned the task of making Safari for Windows, simply borrowed the EULA from the Mac version of Safari, even without reviewing it. Nothing odd, even companies like Apple makes minor mistakes, but it’s pretty ironic that something which was meant to run on Windows was not meant to be installed on a PC.

Apple quickly responded by fixing the licensing terms of the Safari. No, they won’t really sue you for installing Safari on Windows. It would be pretty absurd.

Sharp Launches Mobile Phone for Bloggers

Sharp has launched a new mobile phone in Japan that features a small
QWERTY keyboard and a tool allowing users to easily update their blogs.

The
Sharp 922SH went on sale on Thursday and has a 3.5-inch display that
folds out to the side so the phone can be used more like a miniature
laptop than a traditional clamshell phone. The widescreen VGA display
has a resolution of 854 pixel by 480 pixels.

The phone has an RSS reader and a PC-style web browser in addition to one more adapted to mobile use.

There's
a three-row QWERTY keyboard above which sit hot keys for functions such
as digital mobile TV and the camera. There are also buttons for phone
functions, navigation keys and a shortcut key to Yahoo Mobile, the
mobile internet service offered by Softbank, which is the largest
shareholder in Yahoo Japan.

The phone works on the WCDMA
(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) used in Japan and the GSM
(Global System for Mobile Communications) networks found elsewhere. Its
features include Bluetooth and a 2MP main camera and 110,000-pixel
sub-camera for videoconferencing. It accepts Micro SD memory cards.

The
phone measures 56mm by 116mm by 17mm and weighs 132g. Battery life is
250 minutes of talk time on WCDMA and 270 minutes on GSM with standby
time at 340 hours and 310 hours respectively, said Sharp. TV viewing
time is 4.5 hours.

The phone is locked to the Softbank network in Japan and there are no plans at present to launch it overseas.

Even if red isn't your hue of choice, Samsung's L210 point-and-shoot comes in black and silver motifs too, and while the 10.2-megapixel sensor is probably a bit much for a shooter this size, we suppose Sammy's just following the trend. Samsung's First Mobile TV Phone With AT&T

Intel Ups Speed of Quad-Core Processors

Intel unveiled two low-voltage, 45-nanometer server processors.

The quad-core Xeon L5400 Series chips run at 50 watts -- or 12.5 watts per core -- but their performance still reaches the 2.5-GHz mark. Intel is making the chips using the 45nm manufacturing process that it first used with its Penryn family of chips, which were unveiled last November.

The new chips deliver the same performance as their predecessors, the Xeon 5400 Series, but use 40% less power, according to a company spokesman.

Energy-efficient processors are gaining more attention as companies increasingly look to go green -- in order to save both power and money. For companies with large data centers, the cost of electricity can sap a significant portion of the IT budget.

"There is a class of customer that is looking more to economically- or environmentally-friendly designs," said Stephen Thorne, a product line manager in Intel's server platform group. "And there also are customers who are trying to pack as much performance as possible into their data center."

Thorne noted that there has been a call for energy-efficient processors in blade configurations. "A lot of users have power constraints or physical constraints," he added. "Say you have a fixed space in Manhattan. You can't expand the space, but with lower-energy processors, you could pack more servers into a rack because each server is using less power."

In January, Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. disclosed that it was picking up speed on delivering its own energy-efficient quad-core chip, the 9100E, which reportedly uses one-third less power than AMD Phenom chips. The 9100E had been slated on in-house AMD road maps to ship in either the second or third quarter. The chip is now on the docket to be released this quarter.

And the clock is quickly ticking down on the first quarter. So if AMD's new chip is still on track, it should ship this week.

Intel reported that its new Xeon processors have a 50% larger cache than its previous-generation, low-voltage quad-core Xeon processors. They also have 12MB of on-die cache and dedicated 1333-MHz front-side buses.

Thorne said Intel was able to lower the power consumption on the new chips through a combination of using the 45nm manufacturing process, running them at a slightly slower speed and lowering the voltage across all the cores to parse out the reduction.

Vendors supporting the new Xeon chips include Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM and NEC.

Intel also announced that it expects to begin shipping its L5210 dual-core processor, which will boast a 40-watt rating, a clock speed of 3 GHz, a 6MB cache and a 1333-MHz front-side bus.

Sony Unveils First Internal Blu-ray Disc Drive

Sony Electronics unveiled its first internal Blu-ray disc (BD) ROM drive (BDU-X10S) for the computer. The drive offers consumers an option to upgrade their desktop to a Blu-ray player, which can also play DVDs and CDs.

The BDU-X10S now comes bundled with the CyberLink’s PowerDVD BD Edition software for playing movie titles, recorded Blu-ray disc home videos, DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs. It also supports playback of recorded Blu-ray discs in MPEG-2 or H.264 format, standard DVD-Video discs or recorded DVDs encoded with MPEG-2 or AVCHD formats.

The internal drive allows fast and easy transfer of data or videos through its high-speed Serial ATA (SATA) interface. Its standard 5.25-inch form factor enables easy installation in desktop PCs running Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows XP operating systems.

Other technical specifications include, 8x DVD ROM (Read Only), 24X CD-ROM (Read Only), data buffer size of 4MB, physical dimension of 5.25 x 1.63x 7.0 inch and installation angle supporting both vertical and horizontal.

AMD Intros New Phenom Chips And Triple-Core Processors

Advanced Micro Devices on Thursday announced new Phenom chips, including quad-core chips and its first triple-core processors for desktop PCs.

The company's triple-core Phenom X3 8000 series processors provide an option to mainstream PC buyers who don't want to spend on a quad-core processor but are looking for more performance than a dual-core processor, said Pat Moorhead, vice president of advanced marketing at AMD.

The chips could be used for high-definition video playback, casual mainstream gaming and productivity applications, Moorhead said.

The company's first triple-core processors include the Phenom X3 8400, which runs at 2.1GHz, and the Phenom X3 8600, which runs at 2.3GHz. Both will come with 1.5MB of L2 cache and 2MB of L3 cache.

AMD also launched three Phenom quad-core processors on Thursday — the Phenom X4 9750, which runs at 2.4Ghz; the Phenom X4 9850, which runs at 2.5GHz; and the Phenom 9100e, a low-voltage quad-core processor that runs at 1.8GHz and has a 65-watt power envelope during maximum usage. All the processors contain 2MB of L2 cache and 2MB of L3 cache.

PC makers will ship products with the quad-core processors in the second quarter, AMD said.

The triple-core processors are already shipping in volume to PC makers, AMD said. U.S. vendor ZT Systems will list PCs with the new triple-core Phenoms on Monday, with other "major OEMs" and system vendors shipping products next quarter, AMD said. Many major vendors, including Dell and Hewlett-Packard, have already hinted at including the processors in desktops.

Dell has listed plans to use the chip in its OptiPlex 740 business desktop systems. It will ship the triple-core OptiPlex in the second quarter, a company spokeswoman recently said, but she declined to specify which processor will run the desktop. Hewlett-Packard has also listed a desktop on its Bulgarian-language Web site with AMD's Phenom Triple-Core 8600B processor.

Mesh Computer, a PC vendor in the U.K., is offering the Matrix XXX Plus desktop with the Phenom X3 8400 processor and the Matrix XXX Pro desktop with the Phenom 8600 processor.

Because the triple-core chip is a new concept--set between the widely accepted dual- and quad-cores--it's unclear how it will fit in the market, said Dean McCarron, founder and principal at Mercury Research.

"You're going to get a performance enhancement with the extra core above and beyond a dual-core," McCarron said. But it also falls shy of a quad-core.

AMD designed the triple-core as a way to produce a cheaper chip. The triple-core processor is built on a quad-core CPU, with one core nonfunctional, McCarron said.

The triple-core chip gives AMD a tactical advantage over Intel, McCarron said. Intel will need to answer the triple-core chip with a product priced in the same range while delivering similar performance. Intel can take a dual-core or quad-core processor, adjust features like cache, and price it similar to AMD's triple-core processor, McCarron said.

Motorola Announces Touch-Screen Mobile TV Device

Motorola announced six new products and technology demonstrations Wednesday that are designed to improve the consumer mobile media experience. The devices include a new mobile TV with a touch-screen user interface.

The new Mobile TV DH02 and the other five products will be shown at the CTIA mobile and wireless conference in Las Vegas next week, Motorola said. The previous version, the DH01, did not have the touch-screen capabilities.

U.S. regulators have not allocated wireless spectrum to allow digital broadcasts for handhelds such as the DH02, but Motorola believes that area will open up later this year or early in 2009, a spokeswoman said. The standard is "far more prevalent" in other areas of the world, she added.

Users of Mobile TV DH02 will be able to click, drag and scroll through icons in menus to reach mobile TV content. For wireless carriers, the device will include support for HSDPA and GPRS networks to allow the carriers to provide interactive services for customers. A few details of the DH02 were released; It has the ability to provide 25 frames per second of digital video and its offers portrait view for navigation as well as landscape view for mobile TV and personal media entertainment. Pricing will depend on individual carriers.

Also Wednesday, Motorola announced a plug-and-play desktop device to support indoor fixed WiMax networks, which are rolling out in some states from carriers such as Clearwire. The new CEPi 150 will likely be sold to consumers by carriers and is designed to provide automatic connections to a WiMax service from a carrier for use with devices within a home. It is also certified for mobile Wimax connections in vehicles. Motorola also will present it during a mobile WiMax demonstration at CTIA.

Analysts noted that Motorola's product announcements came on the same day that the company announced its intentions to split off its mobile devices division from its other divisions, probably in an attempt by Motorola to show that it still has a robust product line with new innovations.

The other four products are devoted to ways that carriers can improve wireless networks. A new CDMA femtocell will be demonstrated next week, to be installed in a home or small business to enhance wireless voice and data services. Motorola has previously announced a 3G UMTS femtocells. Femtocells are small, low power, self-installed wireless base stations.

Also, The company will demonstrate a single device to be installed in a carrier's wireless base station that can support both LTE (Long Term Evolution technology) and WiMax, and can be software configurable to support either technology.

In addition, Motorola will provide a separate demonstration of an LTE wireless network supporting high-definition video transmissions, well in advance of the expected rollout of LTE networks in two or more years in the U.S. Finally, the company plans to show at CTIA a network handoff of a voice-over-IP call and a streaming video from a CDMA EV-DO Rev A network to an LTE network.

Multi-Touch Trackpad for Asustek's New Eee PC

The next generation Eee PC laptop by Asustek Computer will come with a multi-touch trackpad in addition to the larger screen, better Webcam and increased data storage, a company representative said Thursday.

The Eee PC 900 boasts an 8.9-inch screen, larger than the 7-inch display on the original Eee PC 701 model, along with a 1.3 MP camera and 12GB solid-state disk drive (SSD). The Webcam on the Eee PC 701 is only 0.3MP and the largest SSD is 8GB.

The Eee PC 900's oversized touchpad works similar to the Macbook Air. Using two fingers, a person can zoom in and out of documents and photos, scroll up and down, and more, an Asustek representative said.

A picture of the Eee PC 900 can be found on the Federal Communications Commission's Web site, where details were submitted for approval by the U.S. government regulator.

A few things the Eee PC 900 will not have include a touchscreen and GPS (global positioning system), the Asustek representative said, despite some news reports to the contrary.

The Eee PC 900 will come pre-loaded with either Microsoft Windows XP or Linux OSs, the representative said.

The first devices will likely hit some markets by June this year. Pricing will vary by country, but in Europe, the new Eee PC will cost around $626.

AMD sees better yield rates on RV670

Since they bought ATI, AMD found themselves in the curious position of battling both Intel and Nvidia for market dominance. A very difficult task to accomplish, since they were losing badly on both fronts.

The troubled company seems to be getting somewhat of a leg up on the GPU side with the Radeon HD 3000 series (RV670) GPUs. Yield rates on these chips have risen to the point where cost of manufacturing has gone down significantly. And now they are planning to offer newer RV670-based cards, like the upcoming Radeon HD 3830, at lower price points.

Considering that GPU prices are still high for performance cards, it wouldn't take much for them to get a price point advantage against Nvidia.

LG Reveals KF300 Slim Fashion Phone

Fashion phones seem to be the in thing these days. 'If it ain't flashy it's trashy' – seems to be the sort of thing making waves in the mobile phone circuit these days. With Samsung's G600 Belle that recently debuted, LG has one to show off as well, their new KF300.

The KF300, to be brutally honest, while it looks slim and sleek does give off a bit of a girls-only type vibe. And that’s not a bad thing ladies. It’s a flip phone with a 2.2-inch QVGA display on the inside and a 1.3-inch TFT screen on the outside. The external screen has a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and the inside has a 240 x 320 pixel resolution with 256K colors. It’s quite the feature rich phone with a 2 megapixel camera with auto-focus to boot, Bluetooth, microSD card support, an FM radio as well as a media player. The KF300 will also support EDGE / GPRS. From the images you’ll also see that there are also a few shortcut keys located right under the screen. It also has a five way nav-pad and rather large keys which is surely a good thing.
The LG KF300 will be available in black and pink. Unfortunately there seems to be no price tag associated with the handset yet. Stay Tuned.

'Printed' solar cells coming to windows, clothing

Solar company Konarka wants to bring plastics to life with the sun.
Konarka has developed technology to create rolls of plastic that can convert light to electricity--a design that will result in solar power being embedded in everything from flashing Coke bottles to wireless sensors, the company claims.
Earlier this month, Konarka said that it has demonstrated the use of inkjet printing to manufacture its solar cells. And at a recent investor conference here, chairman and founder Howard Berke described Konarka's longer-term plans to embed small solar plastic cells in hundreds of products.
In the second half of this year, Berke said, Konarka will make its first shipments to customers and will announce the location of a factory.

Initially the company intends to make portable solar chargers for gadgets as well as self-powered sensors, lights, and smart cards. Farther down the road, it plans to make solar windows and power-generating cloth.

In four years, Berke said, the company intends to have products for the building-integrated photovoltaics (PV) market with "bifacial cells," for placement on windows, that can convert electricity from both sides.

It is also working on a project, sponsored by the Department of Defense, to make fibers that can be woven into clothing, he said.

"You'll be able to wear, carry, integrate PV," said Berke. "Wherever plastics occur, you'll have PV."

But some solar industry watchers have become skeptical about whether this technology will ever live up to its promise. Konarka, founded in 2001, has raised several rounds of capital and taken government grants but still doesn't have a commercial product.

Plastic solar cells have the advantage of being flexible, unlike traditional silicon, but they're not nearly as efficient as rooftop panels.

Konarka's cells, which are made with a roll-to-roll manufacturing process, convert about 5 percent of the light that hits them into electricity, whereas typically solar panels with silicon cells are 16 percent to 20 percent efficient.

But its organic photovoltaic cells can convert low light, can be tuned for specific wavelengths, and can work even when the light hits at a low angle, Berke said.

"We see this as next-generation thin-film PV technology and not competing with silicon," he said.

Finally, a stylus for the iPhone

Most Treo or Blackberry users I've talked to say they won't be switching to the iPhone anytime soon. It's not that they wouldn't love to have one—trust me they would—but they all seem to dislike the iPhone's keyboard. I have to agree with them. I have really small fingers, and even I have a hard time texting on the iPhone.

Blu-ray writers have arrived in the grey market, but not too many know about it. Now LG Electronics is officially announcing the launch of a Blu-ray writer that has BD writing speed of 6x Max.

This is an IDE device that can be mounted on any existing Desktop PC. While a normal CD has a storage capacity of approximately 700 MB, a double layer BD can actually store up to 50 GB of data.
LG maintains that approximately 35 Bollywood movies can be stored in one BD Disc.

Ben has launched its V2400W "premium" LCD display with the claim that it's the world's slimmest 24-inch widescreen monitor. The V2400W, only 2.44-inches at its thickest point, is well equipped with a 4000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, full 1080p HD support, touch controls and sports an overall mirror-black finish.

The monitor combines "unexpected asymmetry and the aerodynamic curves of the B-2 stealth bomber" and is the first in a new "Kinergy" design range from BenQ.

Manfred Wang, director (Lifestyle Design Center) of BenQ, says, "The V2400W is inspired by the B2 stealth bomber, evoking a sense of mystery, awe, and the elite. In addition, the display's asymmetry exemplifies our new design philosophy."
The V2400W will be available at the end of March in China and Asia and available April in Europe and America.

Turn Your PC into a DVD Ripping Monster

Commercial DVDs are far too expensive to let scratches turn your video into a glorified coaster, but most people still don't back up their DVD collection. Once upon a time, the four to eight gigabyte footprint of a DVD on your hard drive was prohibitively large. But since the price of a gigabyte has plummeted, ripping your entire DVD collection to your computer is not just possible, it's prudent—and it's easy. Let's take a look at the best ways to back up and play any DVD rip on your home computer, along with how to burn a DVD rip back to a playable DVD.

What You'll Need

All you need is a PC with a DVD drive and a hard drive with some extra space. If you're working on a computer with limited space, that doesn't rule you out. You can find huge internal hard drives for cheap (like this 500GB drive for $99), and installing that hard drive is a breeze.

You only need a DVD drive capable of burning DVDs if you want to burn your backups back to a disc you can play in a DVD player. DVD burners are crazy cheap at under $30, and they install just as easily as hard drives.

I'm focusing on Windows solutions for this article. That doesn't mean there aren't methods available for other operating systems—it just means that the scope of this feature is limited to Windows users.

Set Up Painless DVD Ripping to Your Hard Drive

There are several methods for ripping your DVDs on your Windows computer, but lets run down a couple of the best below.

Rip DVDs in One-Click with DVD Rip and DVD Shrink

Our first and favorite option for ripping DVDs to your hard drive is DVD Rip, a free, open source application built in the Lifehacker workshop designed to make backing up DVDs to your hard drive as simple as possible. DVD Rip works in conjunction with another tool called DVD Shrink, a freeware application that rips and compresses the DVD image. DVD Shrink does all the heavy lifting—DVD Rip just makes it super-simple to use.

Pros: DVD Shrink compresses your rips so they take about half the space on your hard drive, so despite the fact that storage is cheap, you can still get more bang from your buck. Also, using DVD Rip in conjunction with DVD Shrink is designed to be simple enough that anyone in your family could use it. DVD Rip is also designed to work well with DVD Play, another helper app (mentioned below), for playing back your DVDs.

Cons: If you want your backups to be exact copies of your DVDs, the shrinking aspect of DVD Shrink probably isn't for you. It saves space, but it skimps on some video fidelity to do it. The space versus quality trade-off is one I'm comfortable making with most DVDs, but you may want to try it out yourself to be sure.

NOTE: DVD Shrink can break the copy protection on most DVDs without issue, but if you're having a problem, try running previously mentioned DVD43, which promises to remove copy protection from virtually any DVD, before you start DVD Shrink.

DVDFab HD Decrypter

Like DVD Shrink, DVDFab HD Decrypter breaks copy protection and rips the DVD contents to your hard drive. Unlike DVD Shrink, DVDFab does not compress the rip, so it's going to be the same quality as the original. DVDFab is actually a shareware app, but the trial version does full DVD rips and will even rip only the main movie.

Pros: DVDFab has a great reputation for cutting through copy protection, and it results in full quality rips.

Cons: Full quality rips mean lots of hard drive space per movie—around 8GB. If that's not a problem, more power to the full rip. If it is, DVD Shrink (with or without DVD Rip) will half that to about 4 or 5GB and might be more your taste. You might also consider ripping just the main movie with DVDFab if you don't want or need the extra features to save space.

Play Back Your Rips

Now that you've set up your computer to inhale any and every DVD you throw its way, you want to play these ripped DVDs. You could go one step further and encode them to popular compressed formats like DivX, but the rips you've already set up have their own charm for a couple of reasons.

First, ripping DVDs to the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders (the default output for these methods) means you retain the entire DVD structure, so watching the rip works just like if you were watching the DVD, complete with menus and special features. Second, these folders can easily be burned back to DVDs so that—in the event that one of your physical discs is damaged—you can just burn the backup and never miss a beat. Here are a few methods and apps you can use to play back these DVDs on your computer and burn new DVDs from the rips.

Play Back Ripped DVDs with DVD Play and VLC

Similar to DVD Rip, DVD Play is a helper application that works in conjunction with the popular open source media player, VLC, to help you navigate and play back your ripped DVDs. To get a look at how DVD Play works in action, check out the video below.

In this video DVD Play is playing back a DVD ripped using DVD Rip and DVD Shrink. All you have to do is point DVD Play at the folder where you're ripping all of your DVDs, and it provides a nice interface for browsing and playing back those ripped DVDs.

Play Back Ripped DVDs in Windows Media Center

If you're a Windows Media Center user, you can play back these ripped DVDs from directly within Media Center. In pre-Vista versions of Media Center, you can just add your rips folder to your My Videos library and they'll automatically show up as playable. The DVD library feature is turned off by default in Vista's Media Center, but all it takes is one small tweak to enable it.

Burn Your Backups to a New DVD with ImgBurn

Finally, if your physical disc gets damaged, you can always burn a new DVD from your backup (again, with DVD menus and all the extra features). This time, we're using a freeware application called ImgBurn. To burn one of your backups to a new DVD, just fire up ImgBurn and enter Build mode by selecting Mode -> Build from the ImgBurn menu. Now just click browse folder icon beneath the source dropdown and point ImgBurn to the folder of the ripped DVD you want to burn.

After you've selected the folder, insert a blank DVD and then click on ImgBurn's Calculate button to determine if your DVD has enough space to burn the backup. If you want to back up DVDs you ripped using DVDFab (all 8GBs), you'll need a dual-layer DVD burner capable of burning to 8GB dual-layer DVDs. If you've just got a regular old DVD burner that can only burn to 4GB single-layer discs (which I suspect is most of us), the DVD Shrink method above is your best choice.

Now, assuming you've got a DVD big enough to handle your DVD rip, just click the Build button (pictured) and let 'er burn. Note: If your Build button does not look like the button pictured, you need to switch to Device Output mode by clicking the small button to the left of the Build button to switch to Device Output mode—otherwise ImgBurn will want to create an ISO file on your hard drive rather than burn the disc.

The iPhone is definitely turning into an enterprise heavyweight. Tom Gibbons, head of Microsoft's Specialized Devices and Applications Group (which houses their Mac developers) confirmed to Fortune that Microsoft is looking at bringing native Office apps to the iPhone with the SDK: "To the extent that Mac Office customers have functionality that they need in that environment, we're actually in the process of trying to understand that now." And why wouldn't they?

On top of Office apps, TellMe, which Microsoft picked up last year, does voice recognition software, mostly for Windows Mobile, but their general manager said that they're "absolutely going to get a version out there as soon as we can, get TellMe out there on the iPhone." So yes, Microsoft plans to be all over your iPhone.

LG is making phone that feels like HUMAN SKIN !!

It's not often we see a cellphone that we're actually a little hesitant to pick up, but LG has managed to pull off that considerable feat with its new LG-SH240 slider, which boasts the rather unique characteristic of a keypad that purportedly feels like real human skin. If that hasn't swayed you away from it, you can also expect the phone to pack a 2 megapixel camera, 3G HSDPA connectivity, and built-in Bluetooth, among other decidedly non-creepy features. You apparently won't be able to pick one up 'round these parts anytime soon though, but those in Korea can grab one now for 400,000 won, or just about $400.

NVIDIA's 9800 GX2-based Quad SLI

NVIDIA's high-end GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics card has been pretty well received on its own, but it looks to be decidedly more of a mixed bag when it comes to a Quad SLI configuration, at least according to a pair of early reviews. Least impressed with the setup was PC Perspective, which described the system's performance as "uninspiring" and "frustrating more often than it was fun to play on." The site did see some potential in the system, however, saying that it's very possible that NVIDIA will be able to address many of the problems in upcoming driver releases. Slightly more positive about the config were the folks at HotHardware, who were pleased with the performance, and seem to have been more satisfied with the setup's ability to scale with various applications than PC Perspective was. On the downside, they did admit that the system didn't scale well for everything, and there is of course the little matter of price (about $1,200), which will likely be pretty hard for even the most die-hard performance junkie to justify.

In case you have missed our comments in our latest Intel processor reviews and motherboards that make use of the latest Intel chipsets, it's been clear to us since late last year that the company is slowing down a bit, after keeping up with an aggressive launch schedule for 2-3 years and also given the pale competition AMD is putting up these days.
You may recall, back in January, we were supposed to get 45nm Core 2 Quad processors that would have eventually replaced the almighty Q6600 and company. But well, that obviously did not happen and it's just now that we begin to see hints of Intel unleashing these products that they've had ready to ship for sometime now. For example, Tech Report spotted this week an OEM Core 2 Quad Q9300 selling on Newegg for $299.99. This is $35 above the list pricing for the 2.5GHz Yorkfield processor that brings a host of enhancements like 6MB of L2 cache and a 1333MHz front-side bus over the Kentsfield 65nm design. We have no doubt the new Core 2 Quad Q9000s will quickly join the A-list of CPUs to own, especially with the right pricing.

Spice Gears up for Mobile TV Content

Mobile TV is definitely going to be the wave of the future. And it seems like India’s own, Spice Telecom is gearing up to launch content for the Mobile TV generation. What Spice is planning on doing is providing content (user-generated) for users to download onto their devices from a given portal they would create. The content according to the site - Telecom Tiger would include clippings form popular Indian TV shows, movies and possibly even music videos perhaps.
Spice has also apparently tied up with BBC World and CNN for news and hopefully we would also see content from other popular channels like Cartoon Network etc. I know I’d be looking forward to watching a few toons on my mobile.

Mininova Testing BitTorrent Powered Streaming Video

There are handful of reasons why people love streaming video sites like YouTube and Hulu so much. Folks behind the popular torrent tracker Mininova are beta testing a new feature, which will allow videos to be streamed from torrent trackers.

Mininova is using the open source Swarm Player developed by Tribler to stream videos. At this point, only featured torrents will work with Swarm Player. If you would like to particpate in this closed beta, then go add your name in this topic.

Of course, streaming videos can’t be saved for later playback. But atleast, you’ll be able to stream a little and see if the video is a fake or not. Hence, you can save yourself from the disappointed caused after the download completes and the video turns out to be a fake. It’s good to see sites like Mininova try to bring technology to life, instead of just juicing more and more profits.

LimeWire Launches Online Music Store

LimeWire has followed BitTorrent’s lead to open up an online music store. LimeWire music store’s catalogue currently features about half million DRM-free tracks from a range of independent and small labels. The store is currently in beta, but not fully loaded. LimeWire team promises to add thousands of new tracks on a daily basis.

All DRM-free tracks are encoded at 256kbps MP3 and sells at $.99 per track. The store also offers an attractive subscription-like model which starts at $9.99 per month of 25 downloads, 50 downloads for $14.99 or 75 downloads for $19.99. 75 tracks for $19.99 translate to $.27 per track, which seems pretty incredible.

LimeWire Store is presently available for US only; international version is expected to arrive sometime later. The store offers no integration with LimeWire client at the moment, but they do have plans to do it later. Maybe, they’ll integrate context based links into the client. I’d really like to see how this works out for LimeWire, once the integration is done. Perhaps, they’ll get the taste of their own medicine, if people start sharing songs illegally.

iPod Touch look alike 2

we know the official story on the CeBIT Meizu shutdown was related to MP3 codec licensing, and not the M8's iPhone-like UI. Still, it does seem strangely fortuitous that more pictures of the phone's interface have just appeared that seem to showcase a move away from Apple's familiar look. The Chinese site CNMO has new shots of the device's music player, which now appears to incorporate song info, EQ display, lyrics, and volume / tracking controls all on one screen. The pictures also show a couple of different music browsing options, both in landscape and portrait mode. Is this a signal that the company is putting some distance between the M8 and the iPhone? Only time will tell.

Update: Some commenters here and on the MeizuMe forums are claiming that these renderings are fake / fan art. So it might not be healthy to get too excited about the above screenshots.

Quite frankly, Teclast's M25 was darn close to being solid, but it's pretty safe to say the M26 trumped it tenfold by ditching the scroll wheel in exchange for a few more millimeters of precious touchscreen. This admittedly sexy PMP features a 2.6-inch 400 x 240 resolution capacitive touch panel, support for RMVB, RM, FLV and AVI file formats, TV out and Microsoft's PlayFX abilities, too. Judging by the interface shot, it'll also handle FM radio and a slew of music / photo formats, and while there's no definitive price just yet, you can look forward to choosing between black and white whenever it lands.

While folks at the Xbox 360 repair lab know good and well how to strip a console back to its birthday suit, Microsoft is going the opposite direction with its limited run of Grand Theft Auto IV Elites. The console itself is purportedly blasted with automotive quality paint and each one is individually numbered. Apparently, the 500 units -- which look to come with a case full of peripherals -- are only being dished out to press outlets and the like, so it seems your only shot at actually acquiring one is by scouring the second hand market. Or you could just steal one and toss a Molotov cocktail behind as you're getting away -- that'd be fitting, we guess.

Spice Mobile Showcases Video Handset

It's always great to hear of an Indian company coming up with something that the world finds attractive enough to spend money on. At the World Mobile Congress currently underway in beautiful Barcelona, our very own Spice Mobile showcased its latest handset, which comes with an Optical Disk Drive on the rear of the phone.

This mobile handset can play videos though using proprietary disks using blue laser technology and the H.264 standard. The disks slip into a tray that pops out from the rear of the phone. Think PSP. If the large 2.8 inch display is not good enough for you (and I don't know why it wouldn't be), it also has a TV out. The headphones socket do extra duty to suit that very purpose.

Users can currently view just one movie (2.5 hours) per disk, but given time I'm sure someone will figure out a way to increase that. At the moment there are about 40 titles available, all Bollywood of course, but that number is likely to multiply many times over in the coming months. The disks are available for about Rs 200 per title.

Spice also launched an innovative handset designed specially for the blind. The keypad is equipped with Braille dots and a voice-guided system reads out the digits as they're typed. It also calls out the numbers of incoming calls. That may not seem like much, but I still think it's a brilliant concept. The phone is priced around Rs 800 ($20).

We don't have details about the price of the video handset yet, or when it would be launched in India officially. So stay tuned.
